DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice

Fall has officially arrived and what better way to celebrate than with this pumpkin pie spice recipe? I love a good DIY project and this one is quick, easy, and rewarding.  By mixing your own blend of spices, you’ll get a fresher taste and more customized results.  Like a little less ginger?  No problem, just cut the amount in half.  Love the smell and taste of nutmeg? (Me too!) go ahead and grate in a little extra.

Do pick up some whole nutmeg and a grater and grind yours fresh this season. There’s absolutely no comparison in the flavor of freshly-ground nutmeg vs pre-ground.  Plus, the beans last a long time and can be used all throughout your holiday recipes this year. A repurposed (or new) spice jar with a shaker lid is the perfect storage container.

DIY Pumpkin Pie Spice

3 Tbsp cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cloves
2 tsp allspice
1 Tbsp nutmeg, freshly ground (about ½ of a bean)
Combine all spices in a bowl and mix well. Store in an airtight container for up to three months. The spice blend will certainly last longer than that, but the flavors will dull over time.
